Yesterday was my first actual day in La Plata. I spent the afternoon shopping for things for my apartment, like towels and pillows. I also wandered around some trying to orient myself in "the city of diagonals." There are several plazas throughout the city. Later, we met at the office/apartment downtown for a small Bible study.
Different things I've noticed: When greeting people, it is customary to give them a "kiss" where you bring your cheek near that of the other person and kiss the air next to them. When it comes to traffic, the roads do not have lanes or many stop signs, you are not allowed to turn right on red, and pedestrians don't have the right of way. The keys have a different shape. They prune trees more. The shops are smaller and generally are more specialized.
Today, I saw the university of La Plata and tonight Chris and I went to a soccer game. It was Los Estudiantes versus a team from Uruguay. Los Estudiantes mascot is a lion and their colors are red and white. The atmosphere in the stadium was crazier than a Badger game, with people constantly jumping and cheering. They even had fireworks lighting up the sky. Los Estudiantes won and are advancing to the semifinal for the championship game of almost all of Latin America.
