Over the weekend, I had the privilege of attending a graduation of a friend of mine. This is a very special occasion because it takes many years and lots of determination for someone to attain this accomplishment in Argentina. They have an unusual way of celebrating. It's very different from our graduation ceremonies that happen once every semester or so. This is partially due to the fact that the education system is different. Students don't necessarily take their final exams at the end of each semester. The exams are scheduled at different times throughout the year. I'm not sure why, but that's how they do things. It's common to have oral exams rather than written ones. So we celebrated Fern's graduation after her last final exam because she has now completed all the required courses for her major. A group of us waited outside her exam room and once she came out with the passing grade, we went outside where she was egged and covered with other unknown icky substances. We then proceeded to parade her around in the trunk of a car, honking as we went in tribute of this festive event. The day was concluded with food and cake because no party is complete without eating.
Let's just say, I have a new appreciation for the billowing gowns and caps worn for our graduation ceremonies.
